Surgery Instructions

Before arriving at the Center for your surgery, please be sure you:

  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING after midnight the day before your surgery unless specifically instructed differently by your surgeon or anesthesiologist;
  • Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the facility as the effects from anesthesia may prohibit you from driving;
  • Bathe or shower the morning of your surgery to reduce the chance of infection. You may brush your teeth, but make sure you do not swallow the water;
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, and do not bring any money or valuables (other than a required co-payment);
  • Bring any and all paperwork your physician may have given you (lab results, x-ray films, EKG, etc);
  • Bring a list of medications you are currently taking;
  • Bring your insurance card, and be prepared to pay any copayment that is required;
  • Bring glasses case or contact lens case as you will need to remove these items before your surgery;
  • Arrive 1 hour before your scheduled surgery for registration and pre-op assessment.

After your surgery you will be taken to our recovery area where you will be able to rest comfortably in a quiet, relaxed setting until you feel ready to make the trip home. Again, please arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home as the effects from anesthesia may take some time to wear off. For the first 24 hours after surgery, please rest comfortably, avoid physical exertion, and do not drive, operate machinery or power tools, or consume alcohol.

  • You will stay in the recovery room until the nurse has determined it is safe for you to go home (this is usually 30 minutes to 1 hour)
  • Your family may be with you during this time
  • You will receive discharge instructions that will be reviewed with your family/friend who is taking you home
  • You may not drive a car, drink alcohol or make important legal decisions for 24 hours after anesthesia
  • You will receive prescriptions for home (if not already given before surgery)
  • You will be escorted to your car (in a wheelchair if needed)
  • You will receive a call from a River Road Surgery Center staff nurse the day after your surgery to check on your progress and answer any questions you may have
  • You will be reminded to make your follow up appointment with your surgeon
